HOW WE GOT STARTED

HISTORY

The Kappa picnic on July 4, 1946 served as a celebration of the end of World War II as well as a Kappa planning meeting to get the Indianapolis Alumni Chapter (IAC) "back up to full speed" for activities interrupted by the war. Alberta Armstong, Susie Artis and Grace Bryant coordinated the food for the picnic and discussed ways the ladies could support their Kappa's. This was the first "meeting" of the Kappa Wives.

The Kappa meetings rotated from home to home and as the IAC began to grow, so did their families. At one of the meetings in (circa) late 1940's the Kappa's agreed to pool money and look for a permanent meeting location. A small apartment building located at 42nd and Boulevard (now a park) was purchased.

For years, the Indianapolis Silhouettes were the only consistent financial chapter in the North Central Province, followed closely by the Gary,  Indiana Chapter.  Currently, within the North Central Province are the following chapters: Indianapolis, Indiana Chapter; East St. Louis, Missouri Chapter; the Evergreen Park, Illinois Chapter; and the Calumet City-Lansing, Michigan Chapter.
